Booking choice: The most booked coach and cruise day, from $151 per person. Check dates Tour details
Te Anau is the last town before Milford Sound, and every coach from Queenstown stops there anyway, about two hours into the drive. Sleeping there instead takes about four hours of road out of your Milford day.
Below: the two bases side by side, what the night saves, how to join a tour from Te Anau, what to do with the extra time, what the town has, who should stay in Queenstown, and what driving the last 120 km involves.
The quick answer
With a car and a spare night, sleep in Te Anau: DOC puts a Te Anau to Milford return at 240 km and about 8 hours with a cruise and short walks, against 600 km and 12 to 14 hours from Queenstown, and DOC itself recommends starting from Te Anau. Without a car, or with one free day and your bags in Queenstown, take the coach day trip: the most booked coach and cruise day costs $151, and it also picks up in Te Anau.

Is it better to stay in Te Anau or Queenstown for Milford Sound?
Te Anau if you have a car and a spare night; Queenstown if you have no car, one free day, or would rather sleep on a coach than drive mountain roads.
The two bases compared, with distances from DOC and Wikipedia:
| Day trip from Queenstown | Night in Te Anau | |
|---|---|---|
| Return distance | About 600 km | About 240 km |
| Length of the day | 12 to 14 hours (coach 12 to 13) | About 8 hours, DOC's estimate |
| Tours | Coaches, small groups, VIP, flights | Coach day with Te Anau pickup, or drive yourself |
| Cruise timing | Around midday, with the coaches | Your choice if you drive, including early |
| Fly in or out | Yes, from Queenstown Airport | No scheduled Milford flights from Te Anau on this site |
| Evenings | Restaurants, bars, the lakefront | A few restaurants, the glowworm caves |
| Extra cost | None if you are already in Queenstown | A night's room and a 2-hour drive each way |
How much driving does a night in Te Anau save?
About four hours on the day. Queenstown to Te Anau is about 171 km, roughly 2 hours each way, and that is the part you no longer do on Milford day.
Te Anau to Milford is about 120 km on State Highway 94, the Milford Road. DOC says to allow at least 2 hours from Te Anau, and Fiordland's own Milford Road fact sheet says 2.5 hours of driving at the minimum, before any stops. Add 45 minutes to park and walk to the cruise terminal, where check-in closes 20 minutes before departure.
The saving is not only time. It is the hours you are awake for: a Te Anau start lets you reach Mirror Lakes while the water is still flat and be back in town for dinner. The farmland between Queenstown and Te Anau is pleasant, but it is not why anyone goes, and the coach does it twice in one day.

Can you join a Milford Sound tour from Te Anau?
Yes. The most booked coach and cruise day picks up in Te Anau as well as central Queenstown, and the operator confirms your pickup time and place after booking.
From Te Anau you join a coach that has already done the first two hours, so your day is shorter and the price is the same $151. Lunch is included, and the cruise has three indoor and outdoor decks. The other coaches and the small-group tours on this site pick up in Queenstown only, though every one of them stops in Te Anau for a break on the way.
The listed departure time is not your pickup time, from Te Anau or from Queenstown. Wait for the operator's confirmation. How the pickups work is covered in Milford Sound pickups in Queenstown.

Pickups in central Queenstown or Te Anau, photo stops on the Milford Road and lunch on the cruise; rated 4.7 from 4,238 reviews.
Check dates Tour detailsWhat can you do with the extra time from Te Anau?
Walk. The Milford Road has short walks of 10 minutes to 3 hours that a coach day has no time for, and with an early start you can be on the water before the Queenstown coaches arrive.
Walk times from the Fiordland fact sheet, all return:
- Mirror Lakes: 10 minutes, best early, before the wind ruffles the water.
- Lake Gunn Nature Walk: 45 minutes of flat forest by the lake.
- Key Summit: 3 hours, up a section of the Routeburn Track to views over the Hollyford Valley.
- Lake Marian: 3 hours, steep, to an alpine lake in a hanging valley.
- Milford foreshore walk: 30 minutes, for the classic Mitre Peak view after the cruise.
Back in Te Anau, the Te Ana-au glowworm caves sit across the lake, with daily guided trips by boat. Te Anau is also the start of the Kepler Track and a base for the Milford Track.

What is Te Anau like as a base?
Small and practical: about 2,920 people, more than 4,000 summer beds, a lakefront, a supermarket, and the last fuel before Milford. It is quiet at night.
Te Anau sits on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau, the largest lake in the South Island, according to Wikipedia. Tourism and farming run the town. You will find motels, holiday parks, a handful of restaurants and cafes, and petrol: there are no shops or fuel stations between Te Anau and Milford Sound, according to DOC.
What it lacks is Queenstown's evening: no gondola, few late bars, nothing like the choice of restaurants. If Queenstown's nightlife is half your trip, that counts. For self-drivers heading on to Dunedin, the Catlins or the Southern Scenic Route, Te Anau sits on the way, and the night costs no detour.

Check datesWho should just day-trip from Queenstown?
People without a car, people with one free day, anyone with a fixed Queenstown hotel, and anyone who wants to fly. The coach does the long part, and you can sleep on the way back.
Two hours of extra driving each way to save two hours of coach each way is a poor trade if you are only moving beds for Milford. The coach day takes the same road with a driver who knows where the kea are, and it runs in rain. Vivienne from Australia, on the glass-roof coach: “Well worth getting up early for.” Samuel from New Zealand, on the coach day, liked having “some quiet on the return journey for reflection and resting”.
Flying is a Queenstown thing too: the plane and boat trip and the glacier-route flight leave from Queenstown and are back in 4.5 to 5 hours. If you are deciding between those, read coach or fly to Milford Sound.

No car and no wish to share a big coach: 15 guests at most, more stops on the Milford Road and a packed lunch.
Check dates Tour detailsIs it hard to drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound?
Not in summer daylight, if you are used to mountain roads. It is a sealed two-lane highway with one long single-lane tunnel, no fuel, no phone signal and, from June to November, a chains rule.
- Fuel: fill up in Te Anau. There is none on the road and none at Milford.
- Signal: no mobile coverage on the Milford Road. Card phones at Knobs Flat and Milford, and a satellite phone at the Homer Tunnel for emergencies only.
- Homer Tunnel: 1.2 km at 945 m above sea level, run on traffic lights in peak periods, with waits of up to 20 minutes, according to DOC.
- Winter: carry chains when signs require them, from June to November, and rent them in Te Anau. DOC suggests leaving after 9 a.m.
- Avalanche zone: no stopping between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm.
- Parking: limited at Milford and full by late morning in summer. Allow 45 minutes to park and reach the terminal.
The full drive, from Queenstown or Te Anau, is in driving Queenstown to Milford Sound.

Can you see Doubtful Sound from Te Anau too?
Yes. Manapouri, the departure point for Doubtful Sound, is 21 km south of Te Anau. From Queenstown, the Doubtful Sound day costs $273 and takes 13 hours.
Doubtful Sound has no road from the outside world: the day goes by coach to Manapouri (2 hours 20 minutes from Queenstown), 1 hour by boat across Lake Manapouri, 1 hour by coach over Wilmot Pass, then a 3-hour cruise from Deep Cove, and back the same way. Yi from Australia: “Better than Milford Sound if you prefer serenity over drama. It is 10x as big, it is quiet and it is vast.” Achiech from Australia was honest about the length: “It's a HUGE day though. I was wrecked by the end.”
If you have two days in Fiordland, Milford from Te Anau and Doubtful from Manapouri make a fair pair. From Queenstown, our Doubtful Sound pick meets at the RealNZ Visitor Centre at 88 Beach Street; bring lunch or buy it on board, card only.

Coach, lake crossing, Wilmot Pass and a 3-hour cruise on a fiord with far fewer boats, in one 13-hour day from Queenstown.
