Booking choice: The most booked coach and cruise day, from $151 per person. Check dates Tour details
Most Milford coaches leave Queenstown within the same hour or two in the morning, from the same few streets. That is why pickups cause more worry than anything else on the day: buses with other names pull up and leave while you wait for yours.
Below: where each tour picks up, the departure-time trap, the central meeting points, Airbnbs and outlying suburbs, a late coach, flight pickups, joining in Te Anau and a checklist for the night before.
The quick answer
The time on a coach listing is the departure, not your pickup. The operator emails your pickup time and place after booking, and pickups start up to 30 minutes before departure. The Pure Milford coach collects at central bus stops and along Frankton Road (and in Te Anau); RealNZ meets at 88 Beach Street or the Frankton bus shelter; GreatSights meets at the InterCity stop on Athol Street; the small group uses select hotels and bus stops, not Airbnbs. Flights collect from hotels or meet at the base or Queenstown Airport.

Where do Milford Sound tours pick up in Queenstown?
It depends on the tour: listed hotels and bus stops, a central meeting point, the Frankton bus hub, or the airport for one of the flights. Your confirmation gives the exact spot.
From the GetYourGuide listings and the operators' published details:
| Tour | Where you join | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Pure Milford coach | Central Queenstown bus stops and along Frankton Road; also Te Anau | Pickups start 30 minutes before departure |
| RealNZ day | 88 Beach Street, or the Frankton bus shelter on Kingston Road | Check in 30 minutes before departure |
| Premium coach | Listed hotel stops, such as Holiday Inn Remarkables Park | No child seats: bring your own |
| Glass-roof coach | InterCity bus stop, Athol Street car park | Central meeting point |
| Small group | Select hotels and bus stops | No Airbnbs or private addresses unless agreed |
| VIP trip | Stops such as the Frankton Bus Hub | Max 12 guests |
| Plane and boat | Hotel transfer, or drive to the base | Free parking; check in 45 minutes early |
| Glacier-route flight | Hotel pickup list or Queenstown Airport terminal | Listed time follows the flight plan |
Is the departure time my pickup time?
No. The listing shows when the coach leaves its base; you are collected earlier, and the operator sends your time after booking.
The Pure Milford listing says it plainly: the departure time is not your pickup time, and it varies with your pickup location. According to its Destination Queenstown listing, pickups begin 30 minutes before departure at bus stops around central Queenstown and along Frankton Road, with departures at 6:15, 7:45 and 8:45 am in summer. If your stop is early on the loop, you could be outside before 6 am.
Read the confirmation the night before, not over breakfast, and set two alarms.

Where are the central meeting points?
88 Beach Street on the lakefront for RealNZ, the InterCity stop in the Athol Street car park for GreatSights, and the Frankton bus hub on Kingston Road for several tours.
88 Beach Street is the RealNZ Visitor Centre, a short walk from most central hotels; RealNZ asks you to check in there 30 minutes before departure, per its listing on Air New Zealand's site, and lets you board at the Frankton bus shelter on Kingston Road instead. InterCity says its main Queenstown stop is in the car park on Athol Street. Kelly from New Zealand, on a RealNZ Doubtful Sound trip from the same address, warned that "there are two RealNZ sites close together". Check the name on the door.
A central meeting point is often simpler than a hotel pickup: you know exactly where to stand, and you can walk there.

Meets at 88 Beach Street or the Frankton bus shelter, with a choice of a Classic or Signature cruise.
Check dates Tour detailsCan I be picked up from an Airbnb or a hotel outside town?
Usually not at the door. The small-group tour collects only from select accommodation and bus stops, and not from Airbnbs or private addresses unless agreed.
If you are in a rental in Fernhill, Arthurs Point or Jacks Point, find the nearest listed stop before you book and work out how you will reach it at dawn. Frankton is the easy one: the Pure Milford loop runs along Frankton Road, RealNZ boards at the Frankton bus shelter, and the VIP trip uses the Frankton Bus Hub. That can save a taxi into town before sunrise.
The small-group tour reconfirms your pickup after booking; reply with your accommodation name.

Pickup at select hotels and bus stops, no more than 15 guests, and a picnic lunch.
Check dates Tour detailsWhat if the coach is late?
Stay at the exact spot and call the operator after about 15 minutes. Pickups run on a loop, and traffic or a slow guest pushes everything back.
Rie from Japan described the feeling well: "The coach didn't arrive for quite some time after the pick-up time, and I was worried as the buses of other companies kept leaving one after another. I think it would be reassuring to know things like the color of the bus in advance." Good idea. Ask.
- Be early: at the stop 10 minutes before your time, outside and visible.
- Save the number: copy the operator's phone number from the confirmation before you leave your room.
- Know the vehicle: ask what colour it is and what name is on the side.
- Do not wander: walking off to look for it is how people get missed.

The most booked coach and cruise day, with pickups around central Queenstown, along Frankton Road and in Te Anau.
Check datesHow do pickups work for the flights?
The plane and boat trip includes a hotel transfer or free parking at the base; the glacier-route flight collects from a hotel list or meets at the Queenstown Airport terminal.
On the plane and boat trip the time on your booking is take-off, and self-drivers are asked to check in 45 minutes before. On both flights, arrive early: a plane waits for nobody once the weather window opens. Zhuan from Australia went to the wrong pickup location for the glacier-route flight, and the customer-service line sorted it. Check whether your confirmation says your hotel, the airport terminal or the operator's base.

Hotel pickup or meet at Queenstown Airport, then a flight over Tutoko Glacier and a cruise, in about 4.5 hours.
Check dates Tour detailsCan I join from Te Anau instead?
Yes, on the Pure Milford coach, which collects in Te Anau as well as Queenstown. You skip four hours of driving across the day.
Te Anau is about two hours from Queenstown and two from Milford. Joining there means a later start and an earlier finish, and Mirror Lakes while the water may still be calm. The operator confirms your Te Anau pickup after booking. Whether a night there is worth it is in Te Anau or Queenstown for Milford.

What should you check the night before?
Your pickup time and place, the operator's phone number, the road status and, on the small group, your lunch order.
- The email: pickup time, stop and operator name.
- The road: the NZTA journey planner or 0800 44 44 49 for the Milford Road, especially from June to November.
- Lunch: on the small group, vegetarian or dietary requests by 5 pm the day before.
- Child seats: on the premium coach, bring your own.
- Bags: the small group takes no luggage or large bags.
- Cash and offline maps: coverage at Milford is limited. Our packing list is in what to bring.
