Driving from Queenstown to Milford Sound

You can drive to Milford Sound and back from Queenstown in a day, but it is about 600 km and 12 to 14 hours, with no fuel after Te Anau. Here is what the drive involves, what it costs and when a coach or a night in Te Anau is the smarter plan.

The Milford Road, State Highway 94, is sealed all the way and open to any car. The problem is distance. From Queenstown you drive south around the mountains to Te Anau, then 120 km north through Fiordland National Park, and you do it all again after the cruise.

Below: whether a day trip by car makes sense, the drive leg by leg, fuel and phones, chains and closures, parking at Milford, booking a cruise, what the car day really costs, and when to drive.

The quick answer

Queenstown to Milford Sound is about 288 km each way via Te Anau: about 2 hours to Te Anau and at least 2 more on the Milford Road, plus up to 45 minutes to park and reach the terminal. DOC puts the Queenstown return at 600 km and 12 to 14 hours and recommends starting from Te Anau instead. Fill up in Te Anau, download offline maps, carry chains from June to November and check the road on the NZTA journey planner. If you only have one day, a coach is easier.

Can you drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound and back in a day?

Yes, if you are comfortable on mountain roads, but DOC puts it at 600 km and 12 to 14 hours, and it recommends doing the return trip from Te Anau instead.

That estimate is from DOC's tips for drivers. From Te Anau the same trip is 240 km and about eight hours, including stops, short walks and a cruise. In a February 2026 release, DOC also described the road as slow, challenging and stressful to drive at peak times, and suggested a guided tour or coach instead.

Our view: a same-day return from Queenstown is a coach day with you doing all the driving, and the hard part, a winding descent from the Homer Tunnel, comes at the end of a long day. Kendra from the USA put it simply after her coach trip: "Great to not have to drive those small roads and enjoy the scenery."

How long does the drive take, leg by leg?

About 2 hours from Queenstown to Te Anau, at least 2 to 2.5 hours from Te Anau to Milford without stops, and up to 45 minutes to park and walk to the terminal.

Where is the last fuel, food and phone signal?

Te Anau. DOC says there are no shops or fuel stations between Te Anau and Milford Sound, and mobile coverage is limited once you leave town.

Milford has emergency fuel only, with select credit cards, according to Milford Sound Lodge. Fill the tank in Te Anau even if it reads half. Public toilets are only at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford. Card phones exist at Knobs Flat and Milford Sound, and the satellite phone at the Homer Tunnel is for emergencies.

Download offline maps and your cruise booking before Te Anau, and buy lunch there: at Milford the only food is the waterfront cafe and the lodge restaurant, where bookings are essential.

Do you need snow chains, and when does the road close?

From June to November vehicles may need to carry chains, as signs direct. The road closes on average about eight days a year, mostly in winter, for snow, avalanches, slips or flooding.

Those figures are on NZTA's Milford Road FAQs. Chains can be rented in Te Anau; learn to fit them in the car park, not on an icy bend. In a typical season 200 to 400 avalanches are observed above and around the road, according to an NZTA release from August 2026; that week the road closed overnight at Lower Hollyford Road from 4:30 pm to about 9 am, with all-day closures possible when snow reached road level.

Between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm there is a no-stopping zone in avalanche season: do not pull over for photos, even when the light is perfect. In winter DOC suggests leaving from 9 am onward, when traffic is lighter. Check the NZTA journey planner or call 0800 44 44 49 the evening before and again in the morning. Our winter post, the Milford Road in winter 2026, has the season's closures.

Where do you park at Milford Sound, and what does it cost?

In the main car park by the terminal, at NZ$10 an hour if you arrive before 3 pm and NZ$5 after, card only. Free parking is at the top of Deepwater Basin Road, a 20 to 30-minute walk away.

Those rates are from Milford Sound Lodge's visitor notes: pay machines take debit and credit cards, not cash, and you can pay online up to 24 hours after leaving. A two-hour cruise plus the walk is three to four hours of parking, roughly NZ$30 to NZ$40. DOC warned in February 2026 that onsite parking is limited and fills quickly in summer. The free Deepwater Basin car park is first come, first served.

How do you book a cruise if you drive?

Separately. A standard adult nature cruise is listed at NZ$179, with deals from NZ$89.50 on quieter sailings, and boats leave between about 10:30 am and 3:15 pm.

Those prices and times are for a Southern Discoveries nature cruise on Air New Zealand's activity site, which asks self-drivers to reach Milford at least an hour before sailing. From Queenstown, a 1 pm cruise means leaving town before 7:30 am. The Fiordland fact sheet says you can usually board a later cruise if you miss yours, but in January "usually" is not a promise.

We do not list cruise-only tickets on this site. The cruise operators sell them on GetYourGuide, and the coach days here include the cruise.

Is driving cheaper than a coach tour?

Rarely for one or two people. A cruise (NZ$179, about $102), parking and about 600 km of fuel, plus the rental, usually costs more per person than the $151 coach day, which includes lunch.

Driving starts to pay with three or four people in one car, or when you already have the car for a South Island road trip. What it never saves is time: the car day is as long as the coach day, and you cannot sleep through the return. A coach also takes the decisions about chains and closures off your hands. Every tour price is in our price guide.

When does driving yourself make sense?

When you sleep in Te Anau. Then it is about two hours each way, you can reach Mirror Lakes before the coaches, and you stop as long as you like.

DOC's own advice is to do the Milford return from Te Anau, and we agree. If you are driving the South Island anyway, Te Anau sits on the way to the Catlins and Dunedin. If Queenstown is your only base, swapping four hours of coach for four hours at the wheel each way gains you nothing. The full case is in Te Anau or Queenstown for Milford.

Wherever you start, leave kea alone. DOC lists them as endangered, and they are known for pulling rubber seals off parked cars.
