Booking choice: The most booked coach and cruise day, from $151 per person. Check dates Tour details
Milford Sound is about 288 km from Queenstown by road, and the road goes the long way round through Te Anau. That distance sets the shape of every coach and van day: roughly five to six hours out with stops, a cruise of up to two hours, and the same road back.
Below: when the day starts, the drive to Te Anau, the stops on the Milford Road, the cruise, the trip home, and how the small-group, fly-cruise-fly and winter days differ.
The quick answer
Coaches leave Queenstown between about 6:15 and 8:45 am, with pickups up to 30 minutes earlier. You reach Te Anau after about two hours, drive the Milford Road with three or four photo stops, and board the cruise around midday or early afternoon. The cruise lasts 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours, and you are back in Queenstown about 12 to 12.5 hours after you left, in the evening. A small-group van takes up to 13 hours; fly-cruise-fly takes 4.5 to 5.

What time does a Milford Sound day trip leave Queenstown?
Early. Pure Milford lists Queenstown departures at 6:15, 7:45 and 8:45 am from October to April, and one at 7:45 am from May to September; RealNZ leaves 88 Beach Street at 6:45, 6:55 or 7:35 am.
Those times come from Pure Milford's Destination Queenstown listing and the RealNZ listing on Air New Zealand's site. They are departure times. Pure Milford starts collecting at bus stops around central Queenstown and along Frankton Road 30 minutes before departure, and RealNZ asks you to check in 30 minutes early. Your own pickup time arrives by email after booking; read it the night before.
Eat before you leave and take water. The first coffee stop is Te Anau, about two hours away. How each tour handles the morning is in our pickup guide.

What happens between Queenstown and Te Anau?
About two hours and 170 km along Lake Wakatipu and through Southland farmland, then a break in Te Anau for toilets, coffee and food. It is the least dramatic part of the day.
The driver uses this stretch for commentary, and many people doze. Te Anau is the last town before Milford Sound: DOC's driver notes say there are no shops or fuel stations beyond it. On the glass-roof coach the morning tea here is at your own expense. If your tour does not include lunch, buy it here.
If you are staying in Te Anau, the Pure Milford coach collects there too, and your day starts two hours later and ends two hours earlier.

Where do coaches stop on the Milford Road?
Usually three or four times in about 120 km: the Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, Knobs Flat or the Divide, and Monkey Creek for the kea, before the Homer Tunnel. The order can change on the day.
Distances from Te Anau, from the Te Anau to Milford Highway guide:
| Stop | From Te Anau | What you do there |
|---|---|---|
| Te Anau Downs | 28 km | Lake views, usually a drive-past |
| Eglinton Valley | 52 km | Wide flat valley with beech forest edges, photo stop |
| Mirror Lakes | 56 km | Short boardwalk; reflections on a calm morning |
| Knobs Flat | 62 km | The last flush toilets before Milford |
| Lake Gunn and the Divide | 79 to 83 km | Short forest walks at the lowest pass over the Main Divide |
| Monkey Creek | 93 km | Kea and Hollyford views; do not feed the kea |
| Homer Tunnel | 99 km | 1.2 km, one lane, east portal at 945 m |
| The Chasm | 110 km | A short forest walk, on some tours |
| Milford Sound | 120 km | Cruise terminal |
How long are you in the Homer Tunnel queue?
Often a few minutes, sometimes up to 20. The tunnel is one lane, and in the summer peak traffic lights let one direction through at a time.
The Homer Tunnel took from 1935 to 1953 to build and drops steeply toward Milford. DOC puts the wait at the lights at up to 20 minutes in summer. Kea often work the queue at the eastern portal, looking for an open window. After the tunnel the road switchbacks down the Cleddau Valley to sea level, and the views of the walls are the best of the drive.
The Chasm, a few kilometres on, reopened in April 2023 as a modified walk with views from the riverbank, according to DOC. Some coaches stop, others skip it to make the cruise. Alan from the UK summed up the drive: "The bus journey is lengthy but was broken up with various photo stops and knowledgable commentary from the driver".

A coach day with photo stops and short walks on the Milford Road, lunch included and pickup in Queenstown or Te Anau.
Check datesWhen is the cruise, and how long is it?
Coaches arrive for a sailing around midday or early afternoon. The cruise lasts 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the tour you booked.
The boats run about 15 km out past Mitre Peak (1,692 m) to the Tasman Sea and back, past Seal Rock, Stirling Falls and Lady Bowen Falls (162 m). Several nose into the spray of Stirling Falls; keep the camera under your jacket. Guests report dolphins on some days, and from July to November Fiordland crested penguins nest along the shore. Garth from Australia left a useful tip: "sit on the left side of the ferry".
Lunch is eaten on board. Which cruise each tour gives you:
| Tour | Cruise | Lunch on board |
|---|---|---|
| Pure Milford coach | 3 indoor and outdoor decks, free tea | Included |
| Premium coach | 2 hours, out to the Tasman Sea | Optional add-on |
| Glass-roof coach | 1 h 45 min catamaran | Picnic or buffet, extra |
| RealNZ day | Classic 1 h 40 min or Signature 2 hours | Buy on board or bring |
| Small group | 1 h 45 min nature cruise | Picnic lunch included |

Choose a 1 h 40 min Classic cruise or a 2-hour Signature cruise with coffee or craft beer, from 88 Beach Street.
Check dates Tour detailsWhat time do you get back to Queenstown?
In the evening, about 12 to 12.5 hours after your coach left. A 7:45 am departure brings you back at around 8 pm.
The return is the same road with a stop or two and far less talking. Samuel from New Zealand liked that part: "some quiet on the return journey for reflection and resting". Lillian from Australia felt sick on the winding drive back, and her driver looked after her; if bends bother you, take your tablet before the Milford Road, not after, and ask for a seat near the front.
Use every toilet stop, needed or not. Yuichi from Japan asked for "A little more toilet break". Book dinner late, or not at all.

How is the small-group day different?
Same road, same fiord, up to 13 hours, but in a Mercedes van with no more than 15 people. The guide can stop where the light is good, and a picnic lunch comes with it.
The Altitude Tours small group collects from select hotels and bus stops, not from Airbnbs or private addresses unless agreed. The default lunch is a chicken sandwich; vegetarian or other diets must reach the team by 5 pm the day before. Large bags and luggage are not allowed, and the listing suggests bringing snacks. Veena from Australia found "the journey through Fiordland National Park was just as memorable as the destination itself".

No more than 15 guests, more stops on the Milford Road, a 1 h 45 min cruise and a picnic lunch.
Check dates Tour detailsWhat does the fly-cruise-fly day look like?
About 4.5 to 5 hours in all: a 30 to 40 minute flight over the Southern Alps, a cruise of up to 2 hours, and a different route home.
On the plane and boat trip the time on your booking is take-off; self-drivers check in 45 minutes before at the base, where parking is free; hotel transfers are included. The cruise serves hot drinks and no food. The Glenorchy Air flight takes about 4.5 hours, crosses Skippers Canyon, the Olivine Ice Plateau and Tutoko Glacier, and you walk through beech forest from the airstrip to the boat. Pilots check the weather about an hour before departure, per one Queenstown operator's published terms.
A morning flight leaves the afternoon free. For the trade-offs, read coach or fly.

Two scenic flights, a 2-hour cruise and back in Queenstown in about five hours.
Check datesHow does winter change the day?
Fewer departures, shorter days and a real chance of the road closing. Pure Milford runs one Queenstown departure at 7:45 am from May to September.
From June to November the Milford Road is in avalanche season. On snow days NZTA can close it overnight at Lower Hollyford Road, from 4:30 pm until about 9 am, as it did in August 2026, and all-day closures happen when snow reaches the road. A closure cancels the coach; the operator offers a new date or a refund. Book Milford early in your Queenstown stay so it can move. The rest is in weather and cancellations and the best time to visit.
