Milford Sound premium coach, Southern Discoveries

A 12.5-hour day in a glass-roof, low-emission coach with USB charging and commentary in several languages through a free app, then a 2-hour catamaran cruise out to the Tasman Sea. Pick it for a full two hours on the water at close to the lowest price.

Milford Sound Day Trip on Premium Coach

About this experience

The operator puts Queenstown to Milford at about five hours by road with stops, or two from Te Anau, and the coach is set up for it: a panoramic glass roof, USB charging, live commentary and a free Southern Discoveries app with 30 sections of commentary in several languages, headphones provided. At Milford you step onto a catamaran for two hours, past Mitre Peak, into the spray of Stirling Falls, close to Bowen Falls and out to the Tasman Sea.

The 4.6 rating from 1,115 reviews ties with the GreatSights coach for the lowest here, and the reviews do not blame the scenery or the drivers. Abhijit praised one who "ensured we were always ahead of time and never rushed us". The friction is food. Lunch is not in the base price: a picnic or the To Kai buffet (selected departures) is ordered when you book, and the listing's AI summary says some travellers want clearer information on meals and extras. Decide at checkout.

Two more lines of small print. The operator does not provide child restraints, so bring your own seat for young children. And the glass-roof coach can be swapped for another for operational reasons. There is a VIP upgrade on the boat too; Danielle, from Australia, took it and rated it highly. The all-in small-van version from the same company is the VIP lounge cruise.

  • Free app commentary in several languages, 30 sections from Queenstown to Milford
  • A full 2-hour catamaran cruise out to the Tasman Sea
  • USB charging and a panoramic glass roof
  • Stops at Mirror Lakes, the Eglinton Valley and Monkey Creek
  • Free tea and coffee for the whole cruise

An absolute must while in New Zealand. We were extremely fortunate with the weather and the wildlife we saw but no matter the conditions it is worth the trip.

We had a fabulous day out! The bus ride was informative with amazing scenery. Stan, our driver, had a terrific sense of humour and was a wealth of information. The cruise was spectacular with more incredible scenery and a nice buffet lunch.

Tips before you book

  • Choose the picnic or the buffet at checkout. We would not count on adding food later.
  • Download the app before you leave town: signal fades after Te Anau.
  • Bring a car seat for small children. The operator does not provide one.
  • Do not feed the kea. DOC reported five killed by vehicles on the Milford Road between April and June 2024 and linked it to people luring them with food.
  • Penguins are seasonal: DOC puts the best tawaki viewing at July to November.
