From December to February the days in Fiordland run past fifteen hours, the road is snow-free and the boats are full. It is also the season of tunnel queues, packed car parks and a terminal that gets busy around midday.
This post covers the 2026-27 summer: what DOC reported about last summer's crowds, why the middle of the day is the crush, the Homer Tunnel lights, daylight by date, sandflies, the school and Chinese New Year holidays, and how far ahead to book.
The quick answer
Expect crowds. DOC reported December 2025 day-cruise passengers up 13%, with visits 6% above the pre-COVID peak. Coach passengers from Queenstown all reach the fiord around midday, and traffic lights control the Homer Tunnel at peak times, with waits of up to 20 minutes. The sun is up for about 15.5 hours at the December solstice. Book several days ahead, a week or more for the small group, flights and the weeks around Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year (6 February 2027). Pack repellent for the sandflies.

How busy does Milford Sound get in summer?
Very. DOC said in February 2026 that the 2025-26 summer could be Milford Sound's busiest on record, with December day-cruise passengers up 13%.
The DOC release of 12 February 2026 counted 12,117 more day-cruise passengers in December 2025 than a year earlier, and overall visits 6% above the pre-COVID peak. Great South reported more independent travellers in rental cars and self-drive visitors. DOC's programme page puts Milford at over a million visitors a year, after numbers more than doubled from about 437,000 in 2012 to 883,000 in 2018.
Summer carries most of that. Parking at the fiord is limited and fills quickly, DOC warns, and Milford Sound Tourism planned extra parking attendants for the Chinese New Year rush. There is nothing in the 2026-27 outlook to suggest a quieter season.

Why is midday the busiest time at the terminal?
Because the drive sets the timetable. Coaches from Queenstown leave early and spend 5 to 6 hours on the road, so they all reach the fiord between late morning and early afternoon.
Te Anau is about 2 hours away without stops, and Queenstown about 4 hours of pure driving, or 5 to 6 by coach with photo stops. Nearly every day trip lands in the same window. A 2007 engineering magazine report quoted on Wikipedia found the cruise boats busy for three to four hours around and after noon and quiet the rest of the day. DOC's June 2026 programme slides list ferry terminal congestion among the short-term problems to fix.
You cannot dodge this on a coach from Queenstown, and that is fine: boarding is organised and the boats are large. To miss it, sleep in Te Anau and drive in for an early sailing, or fly in at a time the coaches are not there. A smaller group helps at the stops, not at the wharf.

Up to 15 guests in a van, more time at the stops on the Milford Road, and a picnic lunch included.
Check dates Tour detailsAre there traffic lights at the Homer Tunnel in summer?
Yes. The tunnel is a single lane, and traffic lights control it over summer peak periods. DOC warns of waits of up to 20 minutes.
The tunnel is about 1.2 km long and too narrow for two coaches to pass, so the lights run one direction at a time. DOC puts summer delays at up to 20 minutes, and with every coach on the same timetable, the queue forms on the way in before lunch and on the way out in the afternoon.
Kea work the queue at the east portal. Keep windows up and food inside, and do not feed them. Coach drivers build the wait into the day; self-drivers should too. DOC asks cruise passengers to allow at least two hours from Te Anau and 45 minutes to park and walk to the terminal.

How long are the days in summer?
About 15 to 15.5 hours of sun from December to mid-January, falling to about 13 hours by the end of February.
The times below are calculated for Milford Sound in New Zealand daylight time (UTC+13). The fiord walls hide the sun for part of the morning and evening, but the light lasts. A 12-hour coach day runs in daylight from pickup to drop-off, which is not true in June, when the sun is up for under 9 hours.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Sun up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 December 2026 | 5:59 | 21:16 | 15 h 16 min |
| 21 December 2026 | 5:59 | 21:33 | 15 h 34 min |
| 15 January 2027 | 6:21 | 21:33 | 15 h 11 min |

Are sandflies bad at Milford Sound in summer?
Yes, on land. They bite at the foreshore, the car park and on the short walks. Repellent and long sleeves fix most of it.
Sandflies, namu in Māori, are part of every Fiordland summer. They gather where you stand still: the foreshore, the car park and the start of short walks. On the moving boat they are much less of a problem. DOC lists insect repellent among the things to bring for the Milford Road.
Put it on before you leave the coach at Mirror Lakes, and again at the fiord. Light long trousers and a long-sleeved top work better than any spray. The rest of the packing list is in what to bring.
How does summer compare with the other seasons?
Summer has the longest days, the warmest air and the most people. It is also wet: January is the rainiest month on the long-term averages.
The figures below are NIWA 1991 to 2020 averages for Milford, quoted on Wikipedia. Winter is cold and quieter, with the least rain but the chains rule and avalanche closures (see the Milford Road in winter). Spring has the loudest waterfalls and tawaki on the water until November. March and April are the calm shoulder.
| Season | Avg high | Rain | Crowds | Road |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer (Dec to Feb) | 18.5 to 20.0°C | 467 to 667 mm a month | Highest | Snow-free; tunnel lights |
| Autumn (Mar to May) | 12.5 to 18.5°C | 528 to 645 mm | Falling | Clear; cold by May |
| Winter (Jun to Aug) | 9.2 to 11.2°C | 440 to 468 mm | Lowest | Chains; avalanche closures |
| Spring (Sep to Nov) | 13.2 to 16.4°C | 541 to 617 mm | Building | Chains to November |

How far ahead should you book a summer Milford trip?
Several days ahead for a big coach, a week or more for the small group, flights and holiday weeks. Free cancellation makes early booking cost nothing.
The busy weeks are easy to predict. New Zealand schools finish term 4 no later than Friday 18 December 2026 and start term 1 between 28 January and 3 February 2027, according to the Ministry of Education. Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027 (China Travel), and in 2026 DOC tied the late-February peak to that holiday. Christmas to mid-January and the week around 6 February are the dates to lock in first.
Seats run out fastest on the vehicles with the fewest: the small group takes 15 at most, the VIP van 12, and the planes fewer still. Book Milford for early in your Queenstown stay so a grounded flight or a bad day can move. Prices for every option are in Milford Sound tour prices.
Fifteen seats at most, a picnic lunch and more time at the stops: the summer seat that sells out first.

Several days for a big coach and a week or more for small groups, flights and the Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year weeks.

Late morning to mid-afternoon, when the coaches from Queenstown and Te Anau arrive. An early sailing from Te Anau avoids most of it.
How long are the Homer Tunnel delays in summer?
